FAQ

  • What makes your rope different from other shibari rope?

Our rope is made by riggers, for riggers, using high-quality, JBO-free jute. Our products offerings are informed by years of experience tying. We’re one of few suppliers who offer whipped ropes, and our rope kits are designed for practicality, based on what we’ve found most useful in our own tying practice.

  • Why Jute?

Jute has an ideal combination of natural texture, creating "bite" for friction, and low elasticity, ensuring knots don't tighten up beyond where you set them. This combination of traits makes for rope that is easy to tie tight and secure knots and frictions, but also remains easy to untie afterwards.

Over time, jute absorbs oils from the hands and skin, softening its feel and deepening its golden luster, creating a rope that feels softer with each use. This natural fiber has a low allergy incidence rate, which makes it a thoughtful choice for both beginners and experienced practitioners.

  • What is JBO?

Jute batching is essential for producing high quality rope, softening raw fibers with oil, water, and emulsifiers for spinning into yarn. Traditionally reliant on whale oil and in modern times using petroleum-based JBO, the process has faced criticism for exposing workers and consumer alike to this chemical. While JBO is cost-effective and speeds up production, it leaves a kerosene-like smell and poses health and environmental risks.

In contrast, our ropes are batch-processed with cold-pressed, fortified soybean oil, a cleaner, safer alternative. Though more expensive and time-intensive, this vegetable-based oil ensures skin-friendly, odor-free ropes while protecting workers and the environment. Choosing JBO-free ropes supports sustainability and promotes healthier production practices.

  • Is Shibari safe?

Rope bondage is an inherently risky activity, proper education is essential for safety. Consider taking classes, workshops, or online courses before practicing, especially for suspension work. Never attempt suspension without proper training and supervision.

  • What size are your ropes?

A traditional full length of Shibari rope is 6 mm thick, and 8 meters long (approximately 26 feet). Rope that is longer is awkward and inconvenient to tie with. Many Shibari harnesses take more than one full length to create, but rather using longer rope, Shibari practitioners will dynamically attach multiple ropes together while tying. This makes for a much more seamless experience for both the rigger and rope bottom.

  • What's the advantage of half and quarter lengths?

Practice shibari for any length of time and you'll quickly encounter the following scenario:

    1. You're almost finished tying a harness, but your rope is just a little too short.

    2. You attach another length of rope and are able to finish the harness, but now you have to figure out what to do with all that leftover rope.

    3. If only you had a really short piece, then you could have attached that and finished the harness, with very little rope left over to figure out what to do with!

This happens so frequently, that coming up with ways to "burn" excess rope, is a Shibari skill in and of itself. It's so common that most riggers will cut shorter lengths of rope and include them in their rope kits. We recognize how common this scenario is, and so we offer shorter half and quarter lengths in our store, so you don’t have to do it yourself

  • How much rope do I need?

Our rope kits are sized based on skill level and ambition. It’s based on our knowledge of how much rope is needed to tie most types of Shibari harnesses, which we’ve acquired from years of tying ourselves. Simply select the appropriate kit size for your current skill level, or the skill level you aspire to reach, and we’ll take care of the rest.

  • What are your shipping times?
